Asian Games medalists honoured

CHANDIGARH, Jan 22: Ten Bangkok Asian Games medal winners and three officials, all belonging to Haryana, were felicitated by the Chandigarh Jat Sabha in a function here today.

The gold medal winners -- Shamsher Singh, Ram Mehar Singh and Ram Bir Singh (all kabaddi) -- were given a cash award of Rs 5100 each. Shakti Singh (shot put), Anil Kumar Sangwan (discus) and four members of the silver medal-winning women's hockey team Pritam Thakran (captain), Sunita Dalal, Sandeep Kaur and Surinder Kaur were presented with Rs 4100 each. Another hockey player Kamla Dalal, who could not make it to the function, was however, presented the award in absentia.

The manager and coach of the men's hockey team which won an Asiad gold medal after a span of 32 years, M S Malik and Maharaj Kishen Kaushik were also given a cash award of Rs 5100 each. Krishan Kumar, who was the manager of the kabaddi team, which won a gold, was given an award of Rs 2100.

Besides, sportspersons belonging to the Jat Sabha fold, who excelled at the national level meets were also given cash awards.

Technical official
Two Chandigarh Sports Department handball coaches --Ravinder Singh and Mahinder Lal, have been appointed technical officials by the Handball Federation of India for the forthcoming Manipur National Games to be held from February 14 to 25.

Varisty judo All India Inter-University judo (men and women) championship will begin at Panjab University Gymnasium Hall, Tomorrow.

More than 30 varsities in both men and women sections are taking part in the meet. Weighing in will be held at 10 a.m., while the bout would begin at 11 a.m.
