NEW DELHI, January 22: A man accused of killing his brother-in-law in a quarrel involving a borrowed book has been sentenced to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 after a 13-year trial. Ram Kishan has been found guilty of murder and attempt to commit suicide. The case dates back to September 5, 1986, when Kishan visited Rakesh Kumar's house. There he picked up a fight with Kumar over an argument that took place between their wives about a month back.
According to the prosecution, Kishan's wife, Veena, had borrowed a book from her sister-in-law, Saroj. Instead of returning the book, Veena passed it on to someone else. Saroj objected to this and entered into an argument with her.
During the argument, Kumar intervened to take his wife's side and slapped his sister, Veena. As a result, Kishan and Kumar had a quarrel. The matter was, however, reconciled then.
On the day of the murder, when Kishan visited Kumar's house at around 5:30 p.m., the issue was apparently brought up again. The discussion became heated and resulted in Kishan stabbing Kumar who died at the spot. Thereafter, the convict attempted suicide by stabbing himself.
Kishan was booked for murder and attempted suicide at the Jahangirpuri police station. He stood trial in the court of Additional Sessions Judge Raghbir Singh.
After a trial that stretched over 13 years, Kishan was was found guilty. After the perusal of case diary in which 24 prosecution witnesses deposed before the court, ASJ Singh said:``The Prosecution has succeeded in establishing the fact that accused murdered Rakesh Kumar's by stabbing him to death and thereafter attempted suicide".
