Arthur scripts victory for Goans

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, JAN 23: Arthur Periera's 20-yard volley helped hosts, Goan Sports Association, to clinch the second Veteran's Football tournament with a 1-0 verdict over Century Rayon today.

Arthur's strike in the 31st minute against the run of play stunned Century Rayon goalkeeper Suresh Rajak when the former intercepted a pass from Rayon defender and volleyed it into the goal.

But, it was Rayon who started well. In the eighth minute, Florian Pereira unleashed a volley from the top of the box which saw Peter D'Silva, Goan 'keeper stretching to full. Pratap Khatri, Rayon's defender was unlucky as his floater hit the bar in the 24th minute. Both the teams failed to score in first-half.

But once Arthur scored the goal, the mood of the game was changed. Goans, who had lacklustre in the first-half, started playing aggressively. Goans defenders -- Remy Fernandes, Sam Monterio, Joe Dias and Glen Misquitta were back in business and stopped Rayon threat's near the box.

Goans could have increased the lead after theirstriker Bernard Periera, the former international, sold a dummy allowing Francis Fernandes to take the shot. Fernandes shot sailed over the bar.

Best goalkeeper of the final: Peter D'Silva (GSA);
