Plucky ITI go down

Micky Aigner
MARGAO, JAN 23: Indian Telephone Industries (ITI), Bangalore did well to fight against the tide for majority of the game but had to give in to the sustained pressure of Goa League champions Salgaocar, going down 0-3 in the second-half in the group `B' Coca Cola National Football League tie at the Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, today.

Bruno Couthinho (49th), S Venkatesh (65th) and substitute Sabir Ali Mondal (76th) helped the Goan team keep their record in the NFL at the Nehru Stadium intact, with their second successive 3-0 verdict at home. The win helped Salgaocar swell their tally to eight from four matches, and attain sole leadership while ITI have four.

If ITI had to be credited on any count it had to be for their defence which played a cool game to ward off the Goan team's innumerable attacks.

After the opening whistle, Salgaocar kept the pressure going for the next 20 minutes. Their medios, particularly Venkatesh, kept their forwards busy.

ITI, who were fighting off the waves of attacks, did manage toconstruct a move but Salgaocar captain Roberto Fernandes's interception killed the move there and then. Buoyed by that ITI pushed forward but chose the wrong idea to attack. They hit too many long ball upfield hoping that the strikers could latch on to one but were unsuccessful.
