Mahavir led a clean sweep by the Army in the men's 25 metre centre fire pistol event for Services with a national record breaking effort. U Sindhu, 15, of Kerala totalled 542 in junior women category of Open Sight Standard Rifle Prone event to improve upon Supreet Kaur Bajwa's (525) record in Delhi last year.

Mahavir's 290 out of 300 points was good enough to put his name in the record books, besides earning him the gold. Mahavir shot mostly on the right side of the card for a first round of 96. He promptly improved it to 99. But in the third he slumped to 95 but was on course for a national record which was in Padam Singh's name (288, 1994, Kanpur). Incidentally, Mahavir's coach H S Grewal finished second witha total of 282 (95,93,94). Another Armyman, CK Chaudhary took the silver with 279 points while S V Singh who also had 279 was off the medal bracket.

Golden double for Aarthi, Bhuvaneshwar: One shooter who was over the moon was 16-year-old Aarthi with two gold medals in 10 metres Open Sight Air Rifle. Aarthi had a total of 328 points with four-round scores of 80, 81,79 and 88.
