Paswan pooh-poohs idea of third front

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CALCUTTA, Jan 23: Janata Dal leader Ram Vilas Paswan today ridiculed the idea of the formation of a third front and said his party was interested only in reviving the United Front.

Paswan told a press conference that he could understand the national front and United Front, ``but what is the third front? No other new front can be formed bypassing the United Front.''

Criticising both Mulayam Singh Yadav and Laloo Prasad Yadav, he said they had deserted the UF and formed the Rashtriya Loktantrik Morcha for more bargaining power. He also charged Mulayam with `betraying' V P Singh and said Laloo had done the same thing with H D Deve Gowda.

Stating that their fight against the communal forces lacked credibility, he said BJP got maximum seats from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Asked about the inclusion of Laloo in the UF, he said Laloo could not be taken into the UF since ``our fight is against corruption as well''.

Paswan who was highly critical about the performance of the Vajpayee Government, said BJP'sallies like AIADMK and Trinamool Congress were ``blackmailing'' the prime minister.

On the survival of the ruling BJP-led coalition, the JD leader said it would largely depend on their allies.

Asked if his party would support the Congress if it formed the government at the Centre, he replied, ``let the Congress take the initiative. We are against BJP''.
