Biwater to invest in India

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU  
MUMBAI, JAN 25: Biwater Plc, one of the world's leading international water companies, announced today that it intends to arrange and invest considerable funds to assist in the development of Indian water and sewerage supply and management systems. It also proposes to establish its Indian headquarters at Bangalore.

Biwater is a multinational company dedicated to the provision of high quality water and waste water systems world-wide. Biwater has specialised expertise in water and environmental engineering, water and waste water products and services and water systems management.

Biwater, in joint venture with Hartasuma, a Malaysian company, has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) to develop a Rs 450 crore water treatment project at Kalamassery, the industrial hub near Cochin.

Biwater operates and manages water system in the Far East, Middle East, Latin America, Africa and Europe. It has developed an enviable reputation for pioneeringsuch projects around the world.

Biwater is involved in two Indian water scheme at present. Biwater has been selected as the preferred bidder in the tender to implement Phase II of the Cauvery Water Supply Scheme, Stage IV, for the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). This will provide 500 million litres per day of potable water to the city's reservoirs and represents some 40 per cent of Bangalore's projected water requirements in 2004.

The Rs 1600 crore project will be funded privately by Biwater and a range of Indian and international investors. This is the first private sector project of its type in India and will be the largest bulk water supply project on build, own, operate, transfer (BOOT) basis in the world it is due for completion in 2003.
