VMC's Bal Mela catches a dose of politics

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Jan 25: As if injecting politics into sports is not enough, here's a case of mixing politics with children's activities. A stall at the Bal Mela, currently on at Kamatibaug, has been shifted allegedly because it exhibited pictures of Congress leaders.

The matter was taken up by the three non-BJP members on the VMC's school board -- which has organised the fair -- Ghulam Dawood Memon and Kamal Pandya (Congress) and Dilip Shrivastava (independent), after which the stall was re-opened at the fair.

Memon told Express Newsline that Sayajigunj School-1, allotted the prime slot of the first stall in the fair, was scheduled to display portraits of former prime ministers. ``Realising that the first stall would show Congress leaders like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, the BJP members removed the stall on the night of January 23 and kept it at an unknown space on Sunday'', he alleged, added that the stall was re-opened, though at a different place, on Monday.

When contacted, however, school board chairman Kishan Seth and vice-chairman K L Patel told Express Newsline that there was no malicious motive in shifting the stall. ``We ourselves have wooden cutouts of Congress leaders who sacrificed so much for the country, including Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, so the allegations of Congress members are baseless and amount to nothing'', Seth said.

Mayor Bharatiben Vyas said she was not aware of the incident.
