Rallies to mark Republic day celebrations

VADODARA, Jan 25: The district administration and various social and political organisations will hold several functions to celebrate Republic Day on Tuesday.

Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Jaspal Singh will unfurl the national flag at the Polo Ground and Zilla Panchayat president Kalyanbhai Patel will hoist the flag at the Zilla Panchayat office opposite Laxmi Vilas Palace.

M S University vice-chancellor Anil Kane will inaugurate the republic day function at the University Pavilion by hoisting the national flag and former MP Ranjitsinh Gaekwad will flag off a `March for Unity of India', to be organised by the Youth Council of Sri Aurobindo Society, near Sardar Statue.

The Lions Club of Baroda and Vadodara Municipal Corporation have organised rallies to commemorate the occasion. The Lions rally -- from Kothi Char Rasta to Kirti Stambh -- will be addressed by various club office-bearers; the VMC rally will begin at 2 p.m. from Kothi Char Rasta and end at the Polo Ground.

The week-long `Surajya yatra' of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with a view to inform citizens about the achievements of the state government, will also be flagged off from the Polo Ground by Guardian Minister Jaspal Singh.

Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) chairman Nalin Bhatt will inaugurate an 18-day blindness prevention camp being organised by the National Blindness Prevention Programme at Jamnabai Hospital. The programme, in which 25,000 persons are likely to be examined for various diseases and hundreds of cataract operations are planned to be performed, will end on February 12.

Gujarat State fertilisers and Chemicals Limited chairman K D Jeswani will unfurl the national flag at a function at Fertilisernagar and address the residents of Fertilisernagar and surrounding villages. Various cultural programmes including a musical evening has also been arranged.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Meera Ramnivas will hoist the national flag at 10 a.m. at the Remand Home of the Baroda District Probation and Aftercare Association.
