Kane to clean up admissions

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Jan 25: If M S University Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane has his way, admissions to the Commerce faculty will be smooth, regulated and tamasha-free. Beginning this academic year, Kane proposes to introduce guidelines so long restricted to entry to professional courses to the Faculty of Commerce.

``If admissions to the engineering and medical colleges can be controlled vis-a-vis the number of seats, then why can't the same principle be adopted at the Faculty of Commerce'', Kane said, outlining his plan to adopt the model of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology's admissions system for the Commerce faculty. The popular faculty has seen unruly scenes year after year over admissions.

Elaborating on his plan, Kane said that students would be expected to submit their forms for scrutiny to the authorities a month before the admission procedure began. Based on that, they would be allotted seats in the first year B Com classes.

``During on-the-spot admissions as is practiced now the officials have to clear the forms and grant admissions within minutes'', the Vice-Chancellor said. ``With enough time in hand, officials can grant admissions on the basis of merit''.

Pointing out that the professional faculties also handled a massive rush of students, Kane said, ``If those authorities can handle so many students, then the officials at the Commerce faculty shouldn't have a problem, since the number of applicants is comparatively less.''

Moreover, the V-C said, students appearing for the professional courses had a number of options but those seeking to study Commerce had a choice only between the main faculty and the Padra College of Commerce and Arts. ``Once the number of seats are fixed, there would not be much confusion about the percentage criterion either,'' he said.

He added that even the officials would not be forced to succumb to pressure over the percentage criterion as the number of seats would be limited.
