JANUARY 27: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) today decided to file a case against a private contractor to recover dues totalling Rs 7 lakh.Briefing the press after the Mayor-in-Council (MiC), Mayor Nandu Satam disclosed that the BMC was compelled to file the case against M/s Indian Council Product because the company had failed to complete a contract awarded to it in 1991. The contract involved applying reinforced concrete cement (RCC) on water pipelines in the Greater Mumbai area. While the company has forfeited an initial deposit of Rs 1.37 lakh, it still owes the civic corporation Rs 7 lakh by way of arrears and the mounting interest. In another development, the Mayor disclosed that as a cost-cutting measure the BMC has stopped providing extra income to its workers by way of over time (OT). ``We have already stopped 95 per cent of OT money since. The BMC is very much in the red and the OT business is not really improving the efficiency of the corporation,'' he added.
The MiC also discussedthe allocation of Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) to MHADA plots earmarked for public use. ``If the civic corporation is to develop such plots, then it is logical to hand them over to us, or else why should we unnecessarily give the developmental rights?'' said Satam.
