CHANDIGARH, Jan 27: For the first time, the meeting of the 29-member House of the Municipal Corporation today adjourned indefinitely amidst furore by the BJP-SAD alliance councillors pressing the mayor to prove simple majority in the House. This was the first meeting of the House after Kewal Kishab Adiwal took over as mayor. Soon after the start of today's meeting, former mayor and deputy mayor Gian Chand Gupta and Mohinder Singh respectively, urged the mayor to prove simple majority for the smooth functioning of the corporation.Gupta in his hour-long speech in favour of his demand seeking trust vote, sought the Chair's permission to get the resolution seconded. This led to acrimonious scenes in the House by the ruling councillors who accused Gupta of wasting the time of the House.
After the tea break, Desh Raj Tandon sought discussion over supplementary agenda seeking trust vote which the mayor refused to do and threatened to expel him. Tandon was supported by Hitabhilashi, Ranjana Shahi, Mohinder Singh and Gupta which led to an adjournment of five minutes.
When the House reassembled and MC secretary Amritpal Singh wanted to put forth the agenda for discussion, the BJP councillors raised their objections loudly. On this, the mayor ordered Tandon's expulsion from the House for disrupting the proceedings and asked him to leave. But Tandon refused to obey the order which forced the mayor to call the security man in the Well of the House.
Raising strong objection to the use of a martial for the physical removal of Tandon, the Congress councillors joined BJP-SAD councillors and came up to the Well raising slogans and objections over the mayor move. Ranjana Shahi also threatened the mayor that she would register a case against security personnel for touching her and her supporters.
When the situation went out of control, the mayor adjourned the House sine die without conducting the business listed in the agenda. Terming the situation as uncalled for, Congress spokesman Subhash Chawla asked all the eight councillors led by Adiwal to resign from the councillorship and seek fresh mandate as they had the lost people's confidence in ruling the corporation. He held infighting between two warring factions of the BJP responsible for the present situation.
Tandon accused the mayor of failing to stop Prem Sagar from making a personal attack. Meanwhile, the nominated councillors decided to form a joint front under the leadership of Harish Bhanot to avoid unnecessary adjournment and confrontation.
Adiwal, meanwhile said he would take up the matter of the security men disobeying his order for Tandon's removal, with senoir MC officials. Seeking strict action against the securitymen, he said: "Nobody will be allowed to disrupt the proceedings of the House for their vested interest''.
Refuting the allegations of having wasted time, the BJP spokeswoman Ranjana Shahi said they were united over the development of the city. "Our submission from the mayor was to prove simple majority in the House,'' she added.
