Ugly and noisy scenes mar Cong meeting

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
KAITHAL, Jan 27: Factionalism in the Haryana Congress surfaced once again as ugly and noisy scenes were witnessed at a meeting of the Congress workers, addressed by the Pradesh Congress Committee president, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, here yesterday. The trouble started when Gurcharan Singh, a local party leader, came to address the meeting and urged Hooda to ensure that no ``outsider'' was allotted the party ticket for Rai assembly constituency in the next elections. His obvious reference was to a former Haryana minister, who is now a staunch supporter of Hooda.

This contention was supported by some more people present at the meeting at which, the former minister and his supporters got agitated. This resulted in ugly scenes where supporters of Hooda, as well as Bhajan Lal, stood up and started shouting slogans in favour of their leaders and against the ``rival'' leader, using foul language against one another. Some workers pulled down the ``shamiana'' and tried to uproot the bamboo sticks supporting it, though in vain. The commotion lasted about 35 minutes and ultimately, about half of the 1200 odd party workers owing allegiance to the Bhajan Lal faction walked out in protest. Hooda later addressed the remaining party workers.
