Short chase trips robbery bid

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Jan 27: Two knife-wielding youths who attacked and robbed two employees of a petrol pump near Pune Railway Station were apprehended by alert citizens following a short chase in the peak hours of Wednesday morning.

Four persons including a railway police constable were injured while nabbing Vijay Bhiva Savant from Bhandup (West) in Mumbai and Vinay Rajaram Rathe from Pokharwadi village in Satara district. The injured - Ambika Petrol Pump attendants Mukund Kamble and Siraj Sayyed Ali, railway police constable Munna Swamy and automan Ishaq Khan - were discharged after first aid at Sassoon Hospital. Savant and Rathe, who were handed over to the Bund Garden police, have been charged with robbery. The satchel containing Rs 4.50 lakh in cash, snatched from Kamble, has been recovered.

Kamble and the head cashier of the petrol pump, Kiran Patni were on their way to deposit the cash collected on Wednesday and Thursday with the Bank of Baroda when the incident took place.

Kamble and Patni had stepped out of the pump and were walking on the crowded Sadhu Vaswani Road near Income Tax office when they were intercepted by the two youths riding on a scooter. The duo stabbed Kamble and snatched the satchel. As they tried to speed away, Patni grabbed pillion rider Rathe's shirt and pulled him. Savant, who was riding the scooter, lost control and both fell down. While Patni succeeded in nabbing Rathe, Savant jumped into an autorickshaw.

Savant alighted from the rickshaw and ran towards the station when the rickshaw slowed down due to the traffic in front of Hotel Shalimar. Siraj tried to nab him with the help of automen Jafar Sayyed, Zahir Almol, Ishaq Khan, railway policemen Munna Swamy and Yadav as well as traffic policeman B M Mulani, who were standing near the main gate of the railway station. In a desperate getaway bid, he stabbed Siraj, Ishaq and Munna Swamy. He was apprehended and handed over to Sub Inspector Hemant Bhat at the Station police chowki.
