ITC Maurya prevail over Army Red

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, January 27: ITC Maurya, after leading 4-0 in the final chukker, prevailed over Army Red 4-2 to set up semi-final clash with Jindal Steel and Power in the Maharaja Jiwaji Rao Scindia Gold Cup polo championship, here on Thursday.

ITC Maurya, led by Maj Adhiraj Singh, comprised of World Cupper Manupal Godara and Argentinian Pablo Jauretche, a six handicapper. However, it was the youngest member of the side, Simran Shergil, who played a vital role in the ITC Maurya win.

Shergil opened the account for his side in the first chukker with an excellent back-hander that found the mark from 30-yards. ITC Maurya went 2-0 up in the second chukker with a penalty conversion from Pablo, who took a tap then his marker left it for Adhiraj to tap in an easy conversion. In the third chukker, Army men played some brilliant polo and repeatedly attacked ITC Maurya but they lacked finishing, missing the target at least on five occasions. ITC Maurya capitalised on this weakness of Army and Godara scored to make it 3-0.

Maj Pinka Virk scored from a 60-yard penalty shot at the beginning of the fourth chukker to reduce the margin for Army. Moments later, Maj Virk again pounced upon to make it 2-3.

Army joy was shortlived as Adhiraj Singh dribbled past two defenders to strike home with a fine under the neck shot into goal.

In the second match, Jindal overcame a fighting South Delhi 5-4 to enter semis. Sameer Suhag (4) and Lokendra Singh scored for Jindal while Jai Shergill (2), Philip Elliot and Anghad Kalaan were the scorers for South Delhi. LANCERS IN SEMIS: Lancers beat RVC 6-2 to enter the final of the Addl DG RVC Cup. Sandeep Dewan (3), Jagat Singh (2) and Satpal Singh (1) were the scorers for Lancers while Ransher Singh scored both the goals for RVC.
