Action against PI for shielding bootleggers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NASHIK, Jan 28: Police inspector in charge of the Panchavati police station, Vasant Aher, was asked to proceed on leave today on the ground that he has been protecting illicit liquor dens in Waghadi. Nashik Police Commissioner Ambalal Verma said an inquiry would be conducted within a week and appropriate action would be taken.

The move follows an agitation by local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, who have been seeking Aher's transfer for allegedly shielding liquor dons. State president of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Suhas Pharande, MLC Nishigandha Mogal, and the party's city unit President Vijay Sane, had launched an indefinite hunger strike and gheraoed the Panchavati police station to demand the inspector's transfer. However, they withdrew the agitation today following the commissioner's assurance.

Sane had told mediapersons on Wednesday that about a dozen persons had pelted stones at his house and threatened his wife and son of dire consequences if he continued with the campaign. Sanefiled a complaint with the Sarkarwada police, who arrested four persons today.

Photocopies of a memorandum on the complaint were circulated in Waghadi, inciting the bootleggers. Sane claims this was instigated by Inspector Aher.
