Heritage award to Raj Bhavan

MUMBAI, January 29: The seventh Urban Heritage Awards-1998, constituted by an NGO Indian Heritage Society in 1989, were distributed this evening at Raj Bhavan's Darbar Hall at the hands of noted industrialist Keshav Mahindra.Kodak House on D N Road, Holy Men Cathedral at Colaba, and Jijamata Uddyan Conservatory have bagged this year's awards. The citizen's award has gone to the Kridangan Sangopan Samiti. Raj Bhavan has received the award for the most beautiful precinct in the city. Hema Sankalia, architect, Anil Dharker, columnist and Neeru Nanda, editor Interiors India were judges this year. The award consists of a marble plaque with the winner's name engraved on it.

``The decision was unanimous. We divided the nominated buildings largely in three categories - outstanding, commendable and floundering,'' said Dharker. The conservatory at Jijamata Uddyan was awarded because it ``rose from the ashes even on government funds''.
