Workers ransack Labour Commissioner's office

NAGPUR, JAN 31: Irate mathadi workers, demanding dissolution of the existing body of the Mathadi Welfare Board, ransacked the office of the Labour Commissioner near the RBI crossing here late Friday afternoon after staging a vociferous demonstration in support of their demand.

As many as 300-odd demonstrators were detained by the Sitabuldi police.In the attack, the Labour Commissioner's office furniture, telephone and other articles were left badly damaged. The protestors also stoned the office building before some of them stormed into the Labour Commissioner's Office to do the damage.

The Vidarbha Mathadi Kamgar Sangh had planned the demonstration in anticipation of a high-level meeting at the labour commissionerate which was to be chaired by Additional Labour Commissioner Ramchandra Patil. A mob of around 500 mathadi workers gathered in front of the labour commissionerate while the meeting was on and indulged in loud sloganeering.

Around 4 O'clock in the evening, some of the protestors startedpelting stones on the building, damaging window panes and glass doors. Some of them proceeded for the commissioner's office and started ransacking furniture and other articles. While this was on, an additional staff from the Sitabuldi police arrived at the site to assist the police personnel posted on-duty and soon the situation was brought under control.

As many as 300 protestors were detained and sent to the Regional Police Training School. Senior officials including Deputy Commissioner (Zone I) Sanjay Kumar visited the site.
