Indian teams go down fighting

MUMBAI: Indian boys went down fighting to Malaysia in the semi-finals of the ninth Asian Squash Championship at Kuala Lumpur while their girls lost 0-3 to Hong Kong in the round-robin series.

Parth Doshi lost 9-4, 9-3, 9-5 to Ong Beng Hee. But India equalised when Anshul Manchanda overpowered Marcus Yeap 9-3, 9-4, 9-2. Abhijit Kukreja lost in the decider 4-9, 1-9, 0-9 to Mohammed Azlan Iksander. In the other semi-final Pakistan trounced Hong Kong 3-0. In the girls' Rhea Bhandare fought tooth and nail before losing 7-9, 3-9, 10-9, 9-4, 3-9 to Akansha Hazari. Pia Abraham was outclassed by Karen Lau 9-0, 9-6, 9-1 while Joshna Chinnappa lost in straight games 4-9, 2-9, 2-9 to Elise Ng.

Sheetal beats Kazakh for double title

NEW DELHI: Sheetal Gautam of India completed a double as she defeated Valaria Khazova of Kazakhstan 6-4 6-0 to win the ITF Junior world ranking tennis tournament. Sheetal and Sonia Shelar won the doubles title when they defeated compatriotsRadhika Mandke and Radhika Tulpule 1-6 6-4 6-1 on Friday.

Thumping wins for IOB, Union Bank

BANGALORE: Last year's runners-up Indian Overseas Bank (Chennai) began their quest for the title in the tenth all-India Inter-Bank Hockey Tournament with a clinical 5-0 win over Union Bank here today. Local challengers Canara Bank also had a similar outing against Central Bank of India winning 4-0. In another match, Bank of India upset the hopes of Reserve Bank of India beating them 3-2.

Mumbai girls storm into quarter-finals

JAIPUR: Mumbai, Punjabi Patiala, Raipur and Jabalpur stormed into the quarter-finals of the All-India Inter University Women's Hockey tournament today. Mumbai defeated Manonmaniam Sundarnar 2-1. Akshaya Shetty and Saraswati Ramdas scored for Mumbai, while Sumati Das reduced the margin. Mumbai meet Chandigarh in the quarter-final.
