Veteran Basad Ali clinches Navy Golf Pro-Am

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
JANUARY 31: Veteran professional Basad Ali sprung a coup over younger blood to clinch the Navy Golf Pro-Am '99 championship at the par-70 United Services Club, here.

A sub-par card of 67 saw the 40-year-old from Calcutta total 274 for the Rs 83,300 winner's cheque even as another from the Ali branch Feroz finished second three strokes behind.

Overnight leader, Lucknow's Vijay Kumar slipped further down with a three-over 73 to be relegated to the third spot.

Starting five-under par on the final day, the last year's Golfer of the Year, looked quite out of form today. His chances of making the title vanished as the two Basad and Feroz started making inroads into his lead. For Basad it was his consistency finally paying off as he would be cashing a winner's cheque after quite some time, his first this year.

Basad started the day well and was six-under after the fourth with three-birdies. A close finish was on cards with Feroz and Vijay staying at four-under and Basad on five-under after the frontnine.

But the equations started changing from the par four 12. While Basad parred it with a 15-feet putt, Vijay three-putted the same to drop a shot. The 13th saw Basad make a fine chip from just outside the green to land a couple of feet from the pin for a birdie even as Vijay struggled to par it.

Things were as good as over for Vijay, the current leader on the Mahindra Order of Merit when he failed to hole an eight-feet putt to drop a shot. With Vijay out of contention the battle was now between the two Alis. But time was running out for Feroz who was a stroke behind Basad and had only two holes to go.

And lady luck deserted the reigning Indian Open champion on the par-four 17th. With the ball resting next to the root of a tree, Feroz's iron bumped of it while swinging to set the ball rolling over the greens and drop a shot. With Feroz dropping a shot on the last, Basad needed to do no heroics. He parred the it to acknowledge the crowd cheers.

Amateur Anil Rattan achieved top honours in the stablefordevent with 39 points. The teams event was won by pro Dinesh Kumar's team of A Badgaokar and Om Navani with 140 points. FINAL SCORES: 274: Basad Ali (73+69+65+67); 277: Feroz Ali (70+68+69+70); 278: Vijay Kumar (67+68+70+73); 280: Magan Subbarao (64+73+70+73), Shiv Prakash (73+66+72+69).
