SURAT, Jan 31: In possibly the first such arrest, the Prevention of Crime Branch of the city police have arrested three women for allegedly operating brothels in the Muglisara red-light area of the city under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act.

Citing serious health hazards to people as well as problems caused to students and inconvenience to devotees at temples, Jain dehrasars, mosques and churches in the vicinity by the flesh trade, the three were sent to jails in Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

A release issued by the DCB here said that Ganga Shaila Sherpa, Shanu Kancha Tamang and Shashi Dilbahadur Tamang, all of whom were working as pimps in the notorious Noor Jehan Building in the Variyavi Bazaar area of the city, were arrested in a series of raids conducted on Friday and Saturday.

While Sherpa has been sent to the Sabarmati jail in Ahmedabad, the other two have been despatched to the Vadodara jail. A number of their clients, too, were rounded up during the raids.

Kancha was learnt to be running a brothel at room no 5, Sherpa at room no 6 and Dilbahadur at room no 7 of the Noor Jehan Building at Mirzaswami Road. According to their statement, they regularly brought new girls and women from Mumbai and other parts of the country.
