Woman's death: First it's an accident, then becomes dowry case

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Jan 31: Twenty-eight-year-old Ranga Anant Reddy, a welder, has been arrested by the police on charges of harassing his wife over dowry demands and forcing her to commit suicide.

The body of Ranga Reddy's wife Renuka (21) was found floating in the Mula Mutha river at Kharadi on January 29 morning. At that time, Renuka's death was recorded as an accidental death case at Yerawada police station. However, on Saturday Renuka's brother Rajkumar Veera Reddy (from Kalpatti village in Bidar taluka) lodged a fresh FIR against Ranga who was later arrested.

The police said Ranga Reddy had approached them late on January 21 night to report that Renuka was missing. Police had started looking for her after filing a missing person case.

While reporting disappearance of Renuka to the police, Ranga Reddy claimed that she left home for purchasing vegetables around 8 p.m. and did not return. On January 29 morning, the Yerawada police received a tip off from an anonymous caller that the body of a woman was floating in the river near a bridge at Kharadi.

Reddy later identified the body as that of Renuka. Her post-mortem revealed that she had died due to asphyxia caused by drowning. The incident went as a case of accidental death in police records as the circumstances in which Renuka drowned were not known clearly. Veera Reddy approached the police late Saturdayt night and alleged that Renuka ended her life because Ranga was harassing her for dowry. The FIR stated that Ranga often used to torture Renuka for money.
