Ritwik, Tarun Gill claim titles

NEW DELHI, January 31: National champion Ritwik Bhattacharya and Mekhla Subedar won the men's and women's singles titles in the sixth DDA Open squash championships which concluded at the Siri Fort sports complex here today.

In the finals played today, Ritwik defeated Anuj Kalia 9-5, 9-4, 10-8 in a well-contested match. Mekhla had a smooth win over Sohni Kumari, winning in straight games at 9-3, 9-4, 9-3.

In the Under-19 boys category, rising star of the Capital, Tarun Gill emerged the winner in a well-contested game in which he defeated Abhimanyu Jain with the scores reading 10-8, 10-8, 10-8.

Abhimanyu, however, snatched the boys under-16 title beating Mihir Seth 7-9, 9-7, 9-2, 9-6. Mihir Seth, however, went on to clinch the boys under-14 crown defeating Saurav Ghoshal 6-9, 9-2, 9-4, 9-7.

B I Singh gave a tough resistance to former national champion Raj Manchanda who won the veterans title (above 45 years) 9-7, 9-5, 5-9, 0-9, 9-1. The veterans (above 35) title was won by Arjun Khanna who beat Samir Thukral 9-4, 9-3, 5-9, 6-9, 9-0. Samir lost the first two games before bouncing back to win the next. But he lost the decider.

Women's singles: Mekhla Subedar bt Sohni Kumari 9-3, 9-4, 9-3.
Boys Under-19: Tarun Gill bt Abhimanyu Jain 10-8, 10-8, 10-8.
Boys Under-16: Abhimanyu Jain bt Mihir Seth 7-9, 9-7, 9-2, 9-6.
Boys Under-14: Mihir Seth bt Saurav Ghoshal 6-9, 9-2, 9-4, 9-7.
Veterans (above 35): Arjun Khanna bt Samir Thukral 9-4, 9-3, 5-9, 6-9, 9-0.
Veterans (above 45): Raj Manchanda bt B I Singh 9-7, 9-5, 5-9, 0-9, 9-1.
