JEHANABAD, Feb 2: Caste conflicts and socio-economic imbalances formed the backdrop of January 25 massacre of 22 dalits in Bihar's Jehanabad district, R D Kapoor, Additional Secretary to the Union Home Ministry said here today.Kapoor is heading the four-member Central team which visited Shankerbigha village, the spot of the carnage, and talked to the affected families and district officials.
The team, which has officials of the Union Home Ministry and the Ministry of Rural Areas and Employment, encountered a band of angry villagers led by a CPI-ML activist.
Later, Kapoor expressed satisfaction over relief measures undertaken by the State Government, like setting up of a primary health centre and identification of dependents of the bereaved families for Government jobs.
The visiting Central team also held a meeting with senior police officials at Arwal, the headquarters of the police, newly created out of Jehanabad in the aftermath of the Shankerbigha massacre, to discuss ways and means to combatextremist activities in central Bihar.
IG (administration) Niyaz Ahmed, IG (central range) Neelmani, and DIG (Magadh range) S K Bharadwaj, besides the District Magistrate and Police Superintendent of Jehanabad attended the meeting.
Earlier, on arrival from Patna by road, the team members held talks with the members of the affected families at Shankerbigha.
The team, according to official sources, was informed about the action taken by the police in the wake of the carnage.
They said that the team was informed about the arrests made in connection with the incident and steps taken to apprehend those evading arrest. The team was also told about the steps taken by district authorities to settle cases of land dispute.
