MUMBAI, February 2: Special Sessions judge Mridula Bhatkar today sentenced a ward officer of the BMC to two years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 for accepting a bribe from a Shiv Sena corporator in 1987.Special public prosecutor Manohar Kandalkar told the court that on June 25, 1987, the corporator Vinod Ghosalkar had visited ward officer H S Shah of R South Ward for a water connection. Shah told him he would charge a sum of Rs 400 per application. In all, applications amounting to Rs 6,800 were made. On July 18, 1987, Ghosalkar then visited Shah, who told him that unless the amount of Rs 6,800 was paid, he would not sign on the application. Ghosalkar then approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau, who laid a trap and nabbed Shah red-handed. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
