Tibetan boy shot dead trying to reach Nepal

BEIJING: Chinese police shot and killed a Tibetan boy attempting to cross over into Nepal, the Tibet Information Network (TIN) said on Tuesday. Yeshe Dundrub, 15, was travelling with a group of 40 Tibetans who were attempting to reach the exiled Dalai Lama in Dharamsala, India, when they ran into Chinese border patrol around midnight on November 21. According to members of the group who have just reached Kathmandu, the police, from Saga county in Shigatse prefecture, fired warning shots and then started firing at the group. China, which claims its control over Tibet reaches back to the 13th century, sent troops into the troubled region in 1951.

Coke's biggest-ever outdoor ad in China

SHANGHAI: The Coca-Cola Company has unveiled the biggest-ever outdoor advertisement in China, a bottle-shaped sign wrapped around a 26-storey skyscraper near Shanghai's landmark People's Square. The company held a ceremony Monday evening to mark the firstswitching-on of 120 spotlights illuminating it. The Guinness Book of World Records is in the process of determining whether the 8,789 sq m ad is in fact the world's biggest, a statement from beverage company said. It has already recognised it as the largest in China.

S Africa's consul-general to India

JOHANNESBURG: The appointment of a South African attorney convicted in 1996 of stealing trust funds to a top diplomatic post in India will go ahead despite objections from opposition parties, South African Foreign Affairs Minister Alfred Nzo said on Tuesday. Ramesh Vassen deserved a second chance, Nzo said.
