SURAT, Feb 2: Though incident-free, Songadh continued to remain tense for the third day running on Tuesday as the Bajrang Dal extended their successful bandh call for an indefinite period in protest against alleged atrocities by the police and to press for the immediate suspension of District Superintendent of Police Bhavsinh Vaghela.Dal activists, who staged a day-long dharna on Tuesday, were joined by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, who also expressed anger against the stern action taken by the police against young Dal members.
The bandh, meanwhile, was a total success. Though the main market is usually closed on Tuesdays, retailers and vendors, too, kept their shutters down today. The few larriwallas who tried to sell vegetables were prevented from doing so.
A few saffron activists will begin a fast-unto-death from Wednesday; some activists vowed to burn the DSP's effigy in the evening.
South Gujarat in-charge Jayantibhai Kevat and senior leaders Kanubhai Mawani and Vasant Gamit were among the BJP leaders who submitted a memorandum to Deputy Superintendent of Police P Patel in protest against the police action.
The police had arrested 12 Dal activists and three minority community members on Sunday, a few hours after nine shops and cabins were torched in retaliation to the assault on a Dal member late on Saturday. The stepped-up police bandobast was still in place, and would remain there till tension subsided, a police officer said.
No untoward incident was reported for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.
