Farmers' body calls off stir

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Feb 2: The Surat Shehri Sankool Khedut Mandal (SSSKM) has called off its proposed stir against the Surat Urban Development Authority (SUDA) following a meeting between SUDA officials and SSSKM office-bearers.

The Khedul Mandal, which comprises over 130 villages in the periphery of the city, had planned a massive rally in the city to protest against the haphazard reservation of land by the SUDA on Thursday. A Mandal release said that the rally as well as other programmes of agitation have been cancelled.

SUDA chairman Arvind Godiwala, who held a meeting with Khedut Mandal president Bipin Desai and office-bearers, is said to have assured the delegation that bare minimum of cultivable land would be used in reservation. Arvind added that most of the land used in reservation would be waste saline land. Choryasi Taluka Milk Sellers Association president Mohan Patel, Puna Kela Mandal president Ranchhod Patel, Kantha Vibhag Bachao Samiti president Manu Patel and others were present at the meeting.

The delegates were also told that interests of the villagers, environment protection and public transport facilities would be kept in mind while reserving land for developmental purposes. A committee comprising SUDA officials and the Khedut Mandal representatives has been formed to sort out problems or grievances of the villagers. It was also assured that the villagers would be given proper hearing for any objections and that reduction of pollution would be the main consideration of the urban body.

The Khedut Mandal had earlier alleged that besides reserving villagers' land rampantly, the SUDA did not even give a proper hearing to the villagers for any objections.
