Rizvi claim honours

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
February 2: The talking point of the day was Samson Chowgule's catches. The Jhunjhunwala medium-pacer, stationed at point, flew to his left to grab a hot chance, a rasping cut, from Rizvi opener Amol Sasodia.

In the very next over, he was leaping to his right, and stuck to a cut that spooned, and prolific southpaw Bhaktiyar Palekar was walking back to the pavilion.

But Rizvi allowed no further damage, and finished the day at 45 for two, after bowling out Jhunjhunwala for 177 on the first day of the Junior College Sports Association Inter-College Cricket Tournament final at MIG Club, Bandra, today.

Batting first, the Jhunjhunwala innings failed to gain momentum, and Rizvi had leg-spinner Seemab Khan to thank. The stocky spinner, son of late actor Amjad Khan, ran through the Jhunjhunwala top order, reducing them to 95 for six. At that stage, Seemab had figures of 17-6-17-4, and he finished with 4-40 off 26 overs.

Some lusty hitting by Saiban Fakih (25: 35 balls, 2x6, 2x4) and Samson Chowgule (40: 41balls, 7x4) helped Jhunjhunwala recover, but left-arm seamer Uday Karkera polished off the tail.

Brief scores: Jhunjhunwala 177 (Kapil Sharma 34, Samson Chowgule 40, Saiban Fakih 25, Hrishikesh Kadam 21 not out, Uday Karkera 3-34, Seemab Khan 4-40) vs Rizvi 45-2 (Majid Ansari batting 15).
