Get ready your head gear, the Indian Derby is here

NINA PILLAI
Feb 2 : One of the classic all time great moments in cinema must be the scene in My Fair Lady when Eliza Doolittle yells at a horse at the Derby move your bloomin' a**e! Only to have all the aristocratic ladies around faint at her use of language.

Derby Day all over the world is one of high society, high fashion and high spirits, the formality of the event notwithstanding. In England, the Derby is the pivotal day of the racing calendar. Mumbai has an equal tradition of racing and the Mahalaxmi racecourse will echo to the thunder of the speediest horses come the McDowell Indian Derby on Sunday, February 7.

Racing is a traditional sport of the aristocracy and the landed gentry. The well-heeled gentleman of yore took as much pride in his racing colours as his countryseat and coat of arms. This tradition as translated to our shores echoes the same sense of pomp and splendour as will be witnessed on Sunday. In the past the royal families of Gwalior, Baroda, Kashmir and Jaipur were keen racehorse owners, butthey have been replaced by the well-heeled corporate czar of today.

Vijay Mallya, Chairman UB Group, has, by sponsoring the Indian Derby, created the perfect vehicle to advertise McDowell, a premier brand of his flagship, United Breweries Group. Vijay has long been associated with racing and ranks amongst the top breeder-owners of racehorses in the country. The other prominent race horse owners that come to mind are Mr M A M Ramaswamy and Dipak Khaitan.

Having been to a McDowell Derby in the past I can assert with confidence it is an unforgettable day in more ways than one. The last time, I had as my companions The Earl of March and his wife, now Lord and Lady Goodwood. Their family down and live in Goodwood the famed racecourse in England and are keen racegoers. The day was awash with colour and splendour both on and off the racecourse. We gambled for small stakes, walked to the paddock to see the horses and ate and drank at the hospitality tent. Charles was so impressed by the event he kept thanking mefor including them in what was a day of excitement, fun and genuine hospitality, thanks to our host Vijay Mallya.

The promos and advertisements promise `Are you ready for the mega action thriller of the season?' Just feel like fastening an imaginary seat belt. Knowing Vijay I'm sure he'll pull all stops to make the event not just a star-studded race day but a memorable one for each and every invitee. So see you at the racecourse, Sunday.

Oh! And don't forget, no mobile phones and do dress formally as the invitation says. Last, but not least, say a little prayer to Lord Ganesha for good luck and who knows you could be the winner of the jackpot!
