Addressing the gathering, university Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane said in earlier days though the literacy rate was less, respect for women was more. Kane said the quality of life of women could be improved only if they were given due respect.

Explaining the fall in women's status in the society these days, Srinivasan said studies revealed that the literacy rate among women in the city had increased but less women were gainfully employed. ``There was nothing newish in women working, because they had to work to supplement their family income and for a better life''.

Department Head Veena Gandotra pointed out that the increasing number of women working was one of the reasons for improved economic status in families. Gandotra said working outside did not affect a woman's performance in her house. She said, however, the dual responsibility strained her, affecting her health.
