SURAT, Feb 3: The Surat District Bar Association (SDBA) members' stir took a new turn on Wednesday with the Athwa Lines police detaining 14 advocates after they staged a dharna in the Police Commissionerate in Nanpura area. All 14, including SDBA president Ashit Mehta, were released in the afternoon, after which a large number of advocates continued their fast outside the police commissionerate.
Fourteen Bar members including Bar president Ashit Mehta, secretary Shashi Rajkotia, Lalchand Makwana, Samir Vakilwala, Ramesh Patil, Narendra Rawal, Bipin Rawal and others squatted in the compound of the police commissionerate around 11 am. PSI Shukla and a constable of the Athwa Lines police station asked them not to squat in the compound and if they did so, they would be arrested. The advocates retorted that under what sections of the law were they banned from registering their protest. ``I told them as to what rule prevented us from protesting there and added that if they wished, they could arrest us and we would be more than happy,'' Ashit Mehta told Express Newsline.
