SURAT, Feb 3: An irate mob of residents of the Kamala Darwaja area of the city burned a rice-laden tempo on Wednesday afternoon after a man was crushed to death under it. While the driver fled the scene, the tempo was set on fire before the police could reach the spot.The incident occurred at around 1:30 pm when Mohammed Shahid Ahmed Shaikh (28), a resident of Bakshi Ni Wadi in Salabatpura, who was walking past Dalabhai Transport Godown at Kamala Darwaja on Ring Road was hit by the recklessly driven tempo (GJ 15 U 6132) and died on the spot.
Even as a mob of about 400 people gathered at the site, the unidentified tempo driver fled, the police said. The angered mob then set the tempo on fire destroying rice worth Rs 50,000 besides causing extensive damage to the vehicle. The fire brigade, whose is headquartered nearby, and the police rushed to the spot. No arrests have, however, be made.
According to information, the tempo belonged to Shubhalaxmi Rice Mills located beside the Maroli Sugar Factory in Navsari district. There have been a number of instances in the past too, when residents have burnt down or caused extensive damage to vehicles involved in accidents.
