NEW DELHI, February 5: The on-going Indo-Pak cricket match has provided Congress MLAs relief from the demolition drive undertaken by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The DDA has had to put its demolition programme on hold since yesterday, as the police force has been busy with the security arrangements for the match. The DDA officials had scheduled demolitions in Dwarka, Samaipur Badli, Mongolpur Kurd, Ghonda Chowk and Siraspur village. But they had to be postponed.
Yesterday, out of the five demolition actions scheduled, only one could be carried out. While the DDA officials were able to get 2,000 square yards of land cleared at Rangpuri near Vasant Kunj, the demolitions scheduled in Wazirpur, Rohini, Ghazipur and Dwaraka had to be put on hold. Senior DDA officials, however, said that they were not complaining as the force was limited and they had to take care of the needs of the entire city.
Congress MLAs who have been complaining that the demolitions were being carried out specifically targetting their vote-banks, have decided to hold a dharna outside the PMO on February 10.
The demolition drive was launched after Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Vijai Kapoor directed the civic bodies to remove encroachments on January 22. Officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) sealed several properties in the west zone. These include properties at H-22 Rajouri Garden, 169 Raja Garden and WZ-18 Raja Garden.
