Faleiro's attempt to corner rebel Congress MLA still on

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PANAJI, Feb 5: Goa's Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro, who faces defeat on Monday's confidence vote following defection by two of his supporters including one from the ruling Congress, is considering legal options to blunt his rivals.

On Friday, the Chief Minister convened a meeting of the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) to corner former social welfare minister, Deu Mandrekar, who has switched loyalty to Faleiro's rival, the Goa Rajiv Congress. In a notice issued to Mandrekar through the local media, Faleiro hinted of his disqualification as MLA and said he should abstain from the meeting.

``In the event of Deu Gunaji Mandrekar failing to comply with the directive, it shall be taken as proof of the fact that Mandrekar has given up his membership of the Indian National Congress and would be subject to disqualification under the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution,'' the notice warned.

The non-Congress parties in the State have accused the Congress and the Speaker Tomazinho Cardozo, of trying todisqualify Mandrekar ahead of the trust vote on Monday.

``Legally, disqualification under the Tenth Schedule fact prevented them from filing a disqualification petition before the Speaker. Faleiro's office meanwhile indicated that a petition will be filed before the Bombay High Court, seeking disqualification of Deu Mandrekar on the grounds that he had not resigned from the Congress before pledging support to D'Souza.'' The trust vote is scheduled for 5 p.m., on Monday.
