3 for smuggling gold, mobile phones

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Mumbai airport has nabbed three persons for their alleged involvement in smuggling of gold bars, mobile phones and wrist watches collectively valued at about Rs 46 lakh. On a tip-off, one Karichery Nair was nabbed on his arrival from Dubai and 73 mobiles phones and 685 wrist watches worth Rs. 23.85 lakh were recovered from him. In another incident, one Arish Parappil was arrested when 16 gold bars of 10 tolas each valued at Rs. 22.89 lakh were found concealed in his baggage. The third culprit Ahmed Kabir, who was waiting outside the airport , was also nabbed.

SRP jawan killed, 10 hurt in mishap

One SRP jawan was killed and 10 others, including an SRP sub inspector, were injured, some of them seriously, when a van in which they were travelling towards Mumbai rolled down a valley 50 mtrs deep on the Thane-Bhiwandi bypass on Sunday at around 3.30 pm after being rammed by a speeding truck.

The accident took place atSonali village in Bhiwandi taluka. The injured have been admitted to hospital. The jawans of the SRP group No VIII, at Goregaon company platoon no 2, comprising 26 personnel were on their way back to Mumbai from Gadchiroli.

2 jail officials in ACB net

Two jail officials attached to the Arthur Road central prison were caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths while accepting Rs. 600 as bribe to allow home-made food to an inmate. The ACB officials laid a trap following a complaint from one Noor H Ansari, a relative of the prisoner, and arrested senior jailer Maruti Chavan and Chandrakant Pote on Saturday evening, an ACB official said today. Both the accused were not allowing home-made food for the prisoner, arrested in connection with a crime he committed in the jurisdiction of Agripada police station. A city court had on January 27 allowed home-cooked food for the prisoner. Both the accused were today released on bail of Rs 5,000 each.
