MUMBAI, FEB 9: The Maharashtra Government today appointed a high-level ministerial sub-committee to find a solution to the vexatious issue of sale and development of excess cotton mill land. The committee will submit its report to Chief Minister Narayan Rane within a fortnight.Addressing a press conference after the weekly cabinet meeting at Mantralaya this afternoon, Rane and his deputy Gopinath Munde announced that the government wanted to solve the problem ``once and for all.''
This is the fourth such panel to be appointed in the last four years to recommend to the government how to sort out the issue. Members of the committee headed by Industries Minister Leeladhar Dake are Textile Minister Dr Jaiprakash Mundada, Labour Minister Sabir Sheikh, Cooperation Minister Diwakar Raote, Public Works Minister Nitin Gadkari and Higher and Technical Minister Datta Rane.
``The problem of sale of excess land owned by mill owners is extremely complicated and is pending for a long time now. The government wants tomake a policy decision in this matter so that it is applicable to all mills in the state. The committee will hold talks with representatives of the Mill Owners' Association, the union leaders and experts in this matter. I will also be present for the committee meetings and try to understand various aspects of the problem. Once the committee report is ready, the government will take a decision without any delay,'' Rane said. He, however, declined to announce a deadline for taking the final decision.
