NCW to consider amendments to laws on rape

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, FEB 9: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has undertaken a nationwide project for considering amendments to the laws relating to rape.Besides enhancing the awareness on the issue the project aims at giving a fresh look at the existing laws relating to rape and also to invite new thoughts on amendments of relevant laws to meet the dynamics of society, NCW said on Wednesday.

Some of the issue to be addressed at the project, which will involve debates and workshops, would be uniformity in the age of consent in rape laws and to bring it in conformity with Child Marriage Restraint Act, review of definition of rape, to consider recommendation of death penalty to the person accused of the offence of rape.

The month-long project was important as the issue has acquired great national significance and was a dastardly crime destroying the dignity of women, NCW said in a press release.
