India out of race as West Indies win by 33 runs

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, February 9: West Indies rode on an a fine all-round display by skipper Roger Harper (44 not out and 2/29) to beat India by 33 runs and edge the hosts out of contention in the Masters Veterans Cricket Series at Jalandhar.

West Indies scored 204 for seven in 35 overs, thanks to a 48-run third wicket stand between Gus Logie and Larry Gomes besides the fine effort by Harper, before restricting the hosts to 171 for six in their allotted quota.

India never looked in contention after losing their first three wickets for just 41 runs, thanks to some fine bowling by Sylvester Clarke (2/32) and man-of-the-match Harper.

Sanjeev Sharma (39), Chanderkant Pandit (33) and captain Sandeep Patil (32) came up with useful knocks but could not prevent the hosts from losing their second match in a row.

The weakness in Indian bowling attack was evident from the 34 extra runs they conceded, 19 of them as wides. In sharp contrast, the West Indies conceded just eight extra runs.

The West Indies would now meet Sri Lanka on Thursday in the third match of the series at Delhi, which would also be the venue for Sunday's final between the same sides.
