THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB 11: The three-day `Dharma Sansad' of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad which concluded at Ahmedabad on Sunday has identified Kerala as the nucleus of missionary activities in India and suggested that a concerted drive to expose the activities of missionaries and check conversion should start from the state.SNDP Yogam leaders like its general secretary Vellappalli Natesan took note of the reported conversion of 15 Ezhava community members to Christianity in Pathanamthitta district and also the missionary activities among the Ezhava community in Idukki district. It is quite likely that SNDP Yogam may throw its full weight behind the anti-conversion drive.
Ten sanyasins from Kerala led by Swami Sadasivananda Saraswathi of Sivananda Ashramam, Palakkad, attended the conclave of sanyasins in Ahmedabad. Others from Kerala included Vedananda Saraswathi of Chinmaya Mission, Krishnananda Saraswathi of Margadarshaka Mandal and Pranavanantha Saraswathi of Jnanashramam, Thrissur.
The Sansaddiscussed threadbare a report submitted by the sanyasins from Kerala which revealed that `man, money and material' that sustained the missionary activities in various parts of the country flowed mainly from Kerala. The report has given an account of the conversions that have taken place in Kerala over the past few years and the money obtained by various missionary organisations from abroad through official channels.
As a follow-up to the decisions taken at a convention on conversion organised by the VHP here on January 31, the Sangh Parivar outfits have launched a house-to-house campaign among Hindus in various districts of the state with a view to cautioning them about the activities of missionaries.
Leaflets containing exhortations of Mahatma Gandhi and spiritual leaders like Swami Vivekananda, Sree Narayana Guru, Chattambi Swamigal, Ayyankali and Pundit Karuppan against conversion are being freely distributed during this campaign which will last for two months.
Special efforts will be made to bringthe Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe members to the mainstream of Hindu society. With this object in view, SC/ST members will be encouraged to take up priesthood and perform poojas in temples. A major leap in this direction will be made on February 18 when sanyasa deekshas and brahmacharya deekshas will be given to SC/ST members at a solemn ceremony planned at Sree Ramakrishna Ashramam, Adoor. Subramanian, a member of Pulaya community, will be the first to receive sanyasa deeksha at the function.
Another target group of the campaign is women, especially mothers, who are to be involved in a big way in the anti-conversion drive. A mothers' meet is being convened at Guruvayoor on February 24 and 25. A state level sanyasins' meet is planned in the first week of March.
The VHP is conducting a district-wise survey of conversion of Hindus to other communities. The survey report is expected to be ready shortly. The VHP is also collecting details of how much funds have flowed through officialand private channels to missionary organisations having roots in Kerala and how they were utilised.
The VHP is endeavouring to enlist the co-operation of various Hindu organisations in its anti-conversion drive.
