SURAT, Feb 11: The city police have assured full protection to a Catholic church in Nanpura, following submission of an application by Father Oscar Barretto citing a newspaper report alleging that a secret meeting last week had conspired to damage the church. The news report, which did not quote any sources, said the conspiracy had been hatched in a two-hour-long meeting in the cellar of a Katargam school. Seven youths had been deputed for the job, the report said, adding that the Nanpura church had been selected as there were no residences on either side of it.
Without attributing the quotes to anyone, the report said the conspirators condemned the ruling party for targeting a particular Hindu organisation, and ordering the police to deal with them sternly.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Special Branch) M B Pethani told Express Newsline that he had asked Fr Barretto if the present security -- two guards have been posted there ever since prayer halls came under attack in South Gujarat -- was inadequate, but added that Fr Barretto did not ask for more security.
However, the Control Room has been ordered to deal with all such complaints on an urgent basis and depute police wherever required, Pethani said.
