Nandas open relief account
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, February 11: Suresh Nanda, father of the main accused in the BMW case, Sanjeev Nanda, has opened a special account in Deutsche Bank to disburse assistance to the families of the accident victims. A ``preliminary amount'' of Rs 15 lakh has been deposited under `Suresh Nanda BMW accident relief account.' The amount has been placed at the disposal of former Police Commissioner Ved Marwah, said a Nanda family press release. The press release said: ``We have voluntarily deposited this amount which we would like to be disbursed immediately as a preliminary measure to help the victims.''Sanjeev Nanda, who has been in Tihar jail for the last one month, will be produced in the court tomorrow for the extension of his judicial custody. The Nanda family has also moved an application in the court of Metropolitan Magistrate V.K. Sharma to direct the prosecution to assist the defence in providing information about the heirs to the accident victims. Says defence counsel, Ramesh Gupta: ``Since our direct approach to the families would have been considered illegal, we have asked for the court's assistance.'' Special Prosecutor I.U Khan welcomed the relief but reiterated that the prosecution will continue to fight the case on its merit. He said: ``The prosecution will assist them to ensure that the money reaches the right persons. But we will proceed according to the law.'' He stated that the case was not a civil case but a criminal one where there is no scope for bargaining. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
