KG Ramesh, Manoj star in Southern Railway win

NEW DELHI, February 11: Powered by the presence of top national-ranked players K G Ramesh and R Manoj Kumar, Southern Railway defeated North Eastern Railway 2-0 on the opening day of the 45th All India Railway Tennis Championships at DTA courts here today. Apart from team events, the six-day championship featuring 11 Railway teams will have open singles, veterans singles and doubles. Nitin Kirtane, Rajesh Vohra, C V Anand are some of the top players expected to be seen in action.

Team Championship (1st round): Southern Railway bt North Eastern Railway 2-0 (K G ramesh bt Kurban Ali 6-1, 6-1; R Manoj Kumar bt Anandjit Lal 6-2, 6-0); ICF bt Eastern Railway 2-1 (R Balaji bt Sidharth Verma 7-6, 4-6, 6-4; C V Anand lost to Anand Radhakrishnan 3-6, 1-6; R Balaji and C V Anand bt Anand Radhakrishnan and Anwar Ali 6-3, 7-5); Railway Staff College bt CLW 2-1 (Bharat Parmar bt B Ram 6-2, 6-2; Vikas Chaubey lost to K R Yadav 2-6, 7-6, 2-6; Bijlani and Bharat Parmar bt B Ram and K R Yadav 6-3, 6-3).
