Laxmi Ratan Shukla struck twice in successive overs to spoil Pakistan's hopes of a prolonged batting session. He removed Inzamam-ul Haq and scalped Azhar Mahmood. Moin Khan took Pakistan to a respectable total of 247 for nine declared and at the end of the first day of the three-day match Board President's XI were 35 for no loss in Kochi.

Hockey team
Halfback Nausher Singh and forward Brojen Singh are the new faces in the Indian hockey team for the five-Test Pakistan leg of the annual series. Ramandeep Singh, L Prabhakaran, Daljit Dhillon and Samir Dad have been left out as they were nursing injuries.

Paes-Bhupathi win
Defending champions Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi quelled a stiff challenge from Argentinians Pablo Albano and Daniel Orsanic 7-6 (7-4), 7-6, (7-5) to move into the doubles second round of the Dubai Tennis Open last night.
