NEW DELHI, FEB 12: The Supreme Court today sought from Mumbai police details of investigations into attacks on theatres screening controversial movie Fire in the city on December 2 last year.A three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, M Srinivasan and S N Phukan asked Mumbai police to file an affidavit within four weeks detailing the number of persons arrested and chargesheeted.
The court directive came when Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Mumbai, Dalbir Bharti, in an affidavit stated that police had arrested 43 Shiv Sainiks for causing damage to Cinemax and New Empire theatres, which were screening the movie.
The police also said that noted film personalities, including Dilip Kumar, Mahesh Bhatt and Javed Akhtar, who had petitioned the court against the violence, had been given adequate security cover.
Referring to the alleged obscene demonstration before the residence of Dilip Kumar, Bharti said in the affidavit that 23 Shiv Sainiks, including Shiv Sena MLA ShrikantSarmalkar, were arrested and investigation was on.The court also directed the Union Government and Delhi police to file their affidavits within four weeks.
