Group clash leaves 20 injured

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Feb 12: Nearly 20 persons were injured, four of them seriously, in a clash between two groups near Gurdwara Gursagar around 7 p.m. here today.

The injured, most of whom reside in the jhuggis near the gurdwara, located near the Sukhna Lake, have been admitted to the Sector 16 General Hospital. Six women are among those injured.

The police have arrested G.S. Sidhu, who resides near the gurdwara, and registered a case against him and his accomplices for rioting, criminal intimidation and mischief by fire to destroy a house under Section 147, 149, 323, 506 and 436 of the IPC.

Police said the two groups attacked each other with swords, lathis, stones and bricks. Two of the shanties were also reportedly set ablaze. Nearly 250 jhuggis are built in the area. According to police sources, G.S. Sidhu, who claims to be the owner of this land, had rented out jhuggis to these people a few years ago at Rs 150 per month. However, a few months ago, the jhuggi-dwellers had allegedly stopped paying the rent, saying it was government land.

Claiming it to be a politically-motivated issue, police officials said they were informed of an attack on jhuggi-dwellers yesterday also, in which three women were beaten up and some rickshaws were damaged.

On the other hand, Sidhu told the police that the residents had beaten up his man and damaged his tractor.
