Bid to trace genesis of Punjab terrorism

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Feb 12: Terrorism in Punjab should not be linked up with the ethnic conflicts going on all over the world. This was stated by Prof Paramjit Singh Judge, of the Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar at the Panjab University, here today.

Judge was speaking on ``Terrorism in Punjab'' at a seminar on Economic Development and Social Transformation in North-West India organised by the Department of Sociology of the Panjab University. Quoting from a study conducted in 28 villages of the Amritsar and Batala districts, he stated that case studies of 327 terrorists from these villages illustrated that they joined the ranks mostly due to personal enemities and land disputes.

Other sessions included two papers on farmers suicides in Punjab by Prof K Gopal Iyer and Dr Mehar Singh Manick, a theory on the end of a village as a concept by Dr Surinder Singh Jodhka. Meanwhile, Suneet Chopra, joint secretary, All India Agricultural Workers Union and Dr Shakti Kak, spoke on Loss Opportunities for the Agricultural Workers in Haryana and Punjab.
