Swamy figures in a `steaming' controversy
UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
MADURAI, FEB 14: The `steaming' controversy over the closure of an idli shop here, has again come to the fore, with the irrepressible Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, MP, lending a new twist to the issue.A high drama was witnessed today, with Dr Swamy, armed with a Madras High Court order, led the shopkeepers to reopen the shop, at the busy West Masi street, which was closed down on an order by a revenue divisional officer in December last. The entire scene was videographed and the wordy duel between Dr Swamy, who represents Madurai constituency in Lok Sabha, and the police personnel tape-recorded. The police personnel, who were present on bandobust duty, raised objections to opening the shop, citing city police commissioner M Ganesan's order to ensure that ``it is not opened''. Aghast over a sub-inspector's objections to open the shop, Dr Swamy said the commissioner's instructions amounted to contempt of court. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
