Pak hawks vow to end bus diplomacy

AGENCIES
WAGAH BORDER/ISLAMABAD, FEB 14: Senior officials of India and Pakistan met twice at this joint Indo-Pak road check post to finalise details of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's proposed visit to Pakistan on board the New Delhi-Lahore luxury coach on February 20 even as hardliners in Pakistan have vowed to scuttle Vajpayee's trip, the first ever visit by an Indian premier to the country in over a decade, saying it would harm the cause of Kashmir, official sources said today.

"We will not allow Vajpayee to enter Pakistan... As his visit will harm the Kashmiri cause," Altaf Shakoor, central president of the Pasban, youth wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami, said at a protest meet in front of Parliament House.Ignoring Right-wing demands to call off the trip, both governments are going ahead with preparations for the unprecedented visit, widely expected to thaw bilateral ties strained after the May tests.

A team of Indian officials, including security officials, is currently in the country overseeing securityarrangements for the trip, which has created a political storm in Pakistan. Pasban's threat comes close on the heels of a similar one by the Lashkar-e-Toiba which openly acknowledges training militants in Kashmir. Jamaat-e-Islami's deputy chief Liaqat Baloch has also warned that the trip would spark off large-scale protests by religious groups across the country and a stepped up campaign to oust Sharif.Meanwhile, both sides of the Checkpost One being given a facelift by the respective governments. The meeting centered around the security to be provided to Vajpayee, the sources said.

Two meetings were held first on the Indian side of the checkpost and then on the Pakistan side. Officials of both the countries familiarised themselves with the topography of the area. Vajpayee will arrive at the Raja Sansi Airport (Amritsar) from New Delhi by a plane and from the airport he would drive down to the Wagah check post.
