Adani bail plea rejected by chief judicial magistrate

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, Feb 14: Chief Judicial Magistrate J D Mogal of Bhuj rejected the bail application of Rajesh Adani, executive director (finance) of Adani Exports and brother of the company's chairman, and remanded him further in judicial custody till February 24.

Adani and Harish Kumar Gupta, deputy general manager of Adani Exports, had been arrested by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence on Friday night for allegedly forging documents and evading customs duty of around Rs 1.4 crore.

The two were produced before the CJM's court in Bhuj on Saturday, where they were remanded in judicial custody and then taken to a special jail in Bhuj. After the application was rejected, Adani was taken to the central jail, where he is now lodged.

Meanwhile, a statement issued by Adani Exports in Ahmedabad said Adani had, during his meeting with DRI officials, admitted responsibility for the lapses on the company's part and paid the duty for the import consignment in question. The lapses, it said, were in regard to a company transaction that came under the scrutiny of the DRI.

The DRI's application before the court on Sunday stated that its officials had seized 38,000 metric tons of coal, imported by Adani Exports and valued at Rs 7 crores.
